In Ethiopia, the government has called on the people to join the fight against the rebels from Tigray. The office of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Tuesday called on “all capable Ethiopians” to report to the army, special forces and militias in order to support the crackdown on the anti-government troops. The statement came about six weeks after the government in the northern Tigray region declared a ceasefire. The troops from Tigray finally continued their advance. The fighting spread to the neighboring regions of Amhara and Afar. According to the UN, around 170,000 people have fled. The war between the People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) and the central government began in November. The central government military ousted the TPLF from power; but at the end of June the TPLF recaptured the regional capital Mekelle and has advanced since then.
