Manta, MANABI

Remains of fishing nets were found in the mouth of a juvenile humpback whale, which beached early this Wednesday on the beach of the Santa Marianita parish.

The sound emitted by the cetacean caused the inhabitants of this town, including foreigners who reside in this spa in the rural area of Manta, to leave at 03:00 this Wednesday to try to help the whale. They tried to remove the strings that were in his mouth and fins.

About 50 people with knives arrived to cut the nets, but it was impossible because at 05:00, those who attended the rescue, including ecologists and environmental defenders, realized that the whale had died.

The whale shark stranded in Manta died

Karina Shias, who lives in this spa, lamented the death of the whale, especially that fishing gear was found in the cetacean.

According to residents of Santa Marianita, he is the third person to die after running aground on these shores in the last three years.

“She was possibly entangled with fishing lines all over her body for a long time. Santa Marianita is like a sanctuary for whales, turtles, this place is wonderful for everything it has,” Shias said.

Mayor of Manabi questioned by video where he appears near humpback whale

Lorena Zambrano, political lieutenant of Santa Marianita, corroborated Shias’s information, that the cetacean made sounds like crying and that unfortunately it died despite attempts to free it from the nets.

From June to September, dozens of whales arrive on the coast of Manabí to mate or give birth, after a journey of more than 7,000 kilometers from Antarctica.

Around 11:00 this Wednesday, municipal machinery proceeded to remove the cetacean from the coast to locate it in another sector, where it will be buried. (YO)
