The Matrix Brotherhood of Almonte has confirmed that the Pilgrimage of the Rocío 2022 will take place on weekend of June 6 (Pentecost Monday), after two years without being able to celebrate from the Huelva village due to the COVID pandemic.

The Romería del Rocío is one of the most relevant religious and popular celebrations in Spain and every year thousands of people fervently wait to see the procession of ‘The White Dove’. In fact, Almonte with about 22,000 inhabitants is, during the dates of the Rocío, the third city of Spain due to the arrival of pilgrims.

The question about when Rocío is celebrated is very recurrent because the date varies depending on Holy Weekwhich takes place depending on the year in the months of May and June.

What is Rocío and when is it celebrated?

The pilgrimage commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit and the beginning of the activity of the Church.

The pilgrimage starts from Hermitage of El Rocíowhich is located in the small Almonte village of the same name, in the province of Huelva.

As planned, the events will begin on Saturday, June 4, 2022 with the recitation of the Holy Rosary. At 12:00 noon all the Brotherhoods appear at the doors of the sanctuary in order of seniority.

On Sunday, June 5, 2022 (Pentecost Sunday), the Pontifical Mass is celebrated at 10:00 a.m. at the Real del Rocío. After the Eucharist, the pilgrims approach their brotherhoods and meet with their companions. Waiting for the big moment.

On the night of Sunday to Monday June 6, 2022 is the peak of collective fervor. Decked out, the Virgen del Rocío finally leaves her sanctuary once the last Simpecado enters after the Holy Rosary that is prayed, well into the early hours of Monday. It is when the Virgin is reunited with her faithful in the procession that begins with the spectacular “jump off the fence”. To the cries of “Long live the White Dove!”, the Virgin processions until the first light of dawn.

At this moment, the Virgen del Rocío is in the Parish of the Assumption. Due to the Covid, it is the third Holy Week that happens in that place. This year it is hoped that his pilgrimage will finally take place and he will leave from his Hermitage, where will be transferred on May 29Sunday before the pilgrimage.

A week before, the Sunday May 22 –and whenever the sanitary circumstances allow it–, the Queen’s procession through the streets of Almontewhich are lavishly decorated for an outing that is only seen every seven years, according to the Seville Journal.
