The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, wrote down an appeal to the Europeans on the eve of Europe Day, which is celebrated on May 9.

“Today our continent is facing the shadows of the past that we thought were long gone,” she wrote on her Twitter.

The head of the EC condemned Russia’s actions on the territory of Ukraine and noted that since the beginning of the special operation, “millions of innocent people have been forced to leave their homes.”

She called the Ukrainians “a people who are desperately trying to determine their own future” and recalled that Europe in the current situation takes the side of Kyiv.

Von der Leyen also added that 72 years ago “a peaceful and prosperous Europe was born”, and now it is “stronger and more united than ever.”

Meanwhile, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on the eve of May 9 expressed the opposite opinion about the unity of Europe. According to him, the dream of a single European home, the prospect of which was set by the first president of the USSR, Mikhail Gorbachev, “failed and turned into a nightmare.”
