Ministry of Education announces changes in selection for school transport as a result of the case of abuse in Quito school

The Ministry of Education announced that they were already working on a regulation for the selection of school transportation and that it will change aspects based on the case of sexual abuse reported by a student from the Dillon school, located in the north center of Quito. The event would have occurred last week and the driver of a school express is involved.

This Wednesday, April 27, the second day of marches took place by students from various educational establishments and representatives of social groups, demanding a response from the authorities against the officials of the educational institution.

The Deputy Minister of Education, Andrés Chiriboga, pointed out that the school transport contracts that are not administered by this State portfolio are selected by the institution. “The rector acts almost as a witness of honor regardless of the process, because it is the parents who pay for transportation,” he argued.

“We are already preparing the regulations for the selection (of school transport) and we are going to have to consider many other aspects that we had dealt with, but that obviously have to be socialized. They can no longer be seen exclusively as a contractual relationship, but as the result of the selection of someone who will be with our boys and girls,” added Chiriboga.

Yesterday, the Minister of Education, María Brown, informed that the resignation of the rector of the educational establishment was requested and that it was accepted

Regarding the other officials of the school, the deputy minister stressed that they are subject to a conflict resolution board process, in the same school, including the members of the Department of Student Counseling (DECE). The judge of this administrative process will be the Ministry of Education, but he added that due process will be followed.

The father of the student who was the victim of the case known in recent days went in the middle of the march to the exterior of the ministry. He was received by the government authorities to learn about the needs that the family would have.

Finally, the vice minister affirmed that they reached agreements with the students. He preliminarily announced that a work table will be formed within the school, which will be made up of teachers and students appointed by the student council. Also with the directors and administrative staff of the educational center.

No figures were provided, however, the Prosecutor’s Office and the Ministry of Education would be investigating several more cases of sexual abuse against students, which were not revealed, due to the confidentiality of the case. (I)
