Russian Jews who received Israeli passports began to return en masse back to Russia, reports The Jerusalem Post.
According to the newspaper, about a third of those who immigrated to Israel over the past two months – 1,800 people – returned to Russia.
“They flew on flights financed by the Israeli government and received an envelope with cash, and then took a taxi to the hotel … The hotel offered them a wide variety of services, including banking, social and medical, privileges that ordinary immigrants are not entitled to,” Absorption Minister Pnina Tameno-Shete said.
She noted that “when a third of the repatriates enjoy the kindness of Israel, and then go back to Russia, this is a serious problem.”
Recently, about 1,900 people have received initial permission to enter Israel. Upon arrival, they will be checked for the right to stay in Israel, and then it will be decided whether to leave them in the country or return them to Russia.
