In the United States, Senators Rob Portman and Ben Cardin called on President Joe Biden to consider refusing to exchange tax information with the Russian Federation and suspend the US-Russia double tax treaty signed in Washington in 1992. According to TASS, the appeal of senators to Biden is connected with the military operation in Ukraine.
“We do not believe that it is in the interests of the United States to engage in the exchange of information under this treaty, and we urge you to consider suspending this practice,” they said.
As noted in a statement posted on Portman’s website, “The United States must consider all options to isolate Russia and make it clear that there will be consequences for its actions.”
According to the senators, the suspension of the tax treaty with Russia will make it difficult for further US investment in Russia, which, in turn, will prevent preferential tax treatment for Russian business and Russian investment in the US.
On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the start of a special military operation in the Donbass. The goals of the special operation are called “demilitarization and denazification” of Ukraine. This was followed by tough economic sanctions by the US, the EU and other countries against Russia. Many Western companies left the Russian Federation.
