State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin condemned opera singer Anna Netrebko for critical remarks against the Russian military special operation in Ukraine.
He noted that the Saratov artists these days are in the Rostov military hospital, where they perform in front of the wounded, and last week Grigory Leps was there with a concert.
“It is right when artists support our servicemen. But there are those who fled to other countries, to warmer climes – to wait. And even worse – broadcasts from there with accusatory statements. Someone in pursuit of money, someone with a desire to save prestigious concert venues. Like the same Anna Netrebko. You can’t call it anything other than betrayal. There is a voice, but no conscience. The thirst for enrichment and glory outweighed the love for the Motherland, ”Volodin writes in Telegram.
He also stated that “traitors” should leave leadership positions in budgetary institutions of culture, education, healthcare, and other areas. “It’s mean to behave like this in relation to our soldiers and officers defending the country. We will definitely ask the ministers and insist on personnel decisions,” said Viacheslav Volodin.
Recall that the Bavarian State Opera had previously ceased cooperation with Netrebko due to the fact that she did not “condemn the actions of the Russian Federation.” At the same time, the Novosibirsk State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater announced the refusal to hold the singer’s concert on June 2. The theater’s website stated that the reason for the cancellation was the singer’s statement condemning Russia’s actions during the special operation in Ukraine.
Recall that on February 21, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed decrees recognizing the independence of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics (DPR and LPR), and on February 24 he made an emergency appeal to the Russians and announced a special military operation in Donbass. In his speech, he stated that “circumstances require decisive action from Russia” and stressed that “Russia will not allow Ukraine to have nuclear weapons.” The goals of the special operation were called “demilitarization and denazification” of Ukraine.
In response to Russia’s actions, Western countries (USA, Canada, European Union, Great Britain, Japan) announced new, tougher sanctions against the Russian Federation, including financial and economic ones.
