Bulgaria launched an investigation against an employee of the Russian embassy in Sofia. He is suspected of spying for Moscow, said Bulgarian Prosecutor General Ivan Geshev, quoted by RBC.
He reported to the country’s Foreign Minister Teodora Genchowska that the diplomat could carry out “collection and transmission of information constituting state secrets.” A criminal case has been opened against him. It is specified that we are talking about the first secretary of the Russian embassy in Sofia.
The prosecutor’s office explained that under Art. 41 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, diplomats “are obliged not to interfere in the internal affairs of this state”, and the premises of the mission “should not be used for purposes incompatible with the functions of the mission” provided for by the convention.
The diplomat is to be expelled.
The Russian Foreign Ministry has already promised to respond to Sophia’s actions. “Our reaction is unchanged – we will respond,” said Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.
