In Sri Lanka, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has declared a state of emergency. According to RIA Novosti with reference to the publication Adaderana, the state of emergency was introduced against the backdrop of protests, during which 37 people were injured, including journalists and policemen.

It is reported that the state of emergency comes into force on Friday.

Earlier in Colombo, about 5,000 people gathered for a protest march against the catastrophic deterioration of the economic situation. The protesters reached the presidential residence and demanded that he resign. It is noted that some of the demonstrators made attempts to storm the building. The authorities deployed police special forces, tear gas was used. In response, the demonstrators set fire to the bus blocking the road to the residence.

The economic crisis in Sri Lanka has increased due to reduced foreign tourism due to the pandemic coronavirus. This has led to a shortage of foreign exchange reserves. Sri Lankan authorities have been forced to reduce import and introduce strict economy of resources.
