Turkey believes that the European Union will depend on Russian gas for another ten years. According to RIA Novosti with reference to the TRT Haber TV channel, this was stated by the representative of the President of Turkey, Ibrahim Kalyn.
Kalyn recalled that earlier the European Union was developing the Nabucco project as an alternative to gas supplies from Russia.
“If we talk about alternatives, then, as you know, Turkey and Azerbaijan have implemented the TANAP (Trans-Anatolian Gas Pipeline) project, its expansion can be considered as an alternative,” Kalyn said.
Earlier, Azerbaijani Energy Minister Parviz Shabkhazov said that Azerbaijan was ready to increase gas supplies to EU countries via the Southern Gas Transport Corridor as early as 2023.
The Southern Gas Transport Corridor combines the South Caucasus Gas Pipeline (Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum), the Turkish Trans-Anatolian Gas Pipeline (TANAP) and the Trans-Adriatic Gas Pipeline (TAP) with a direction to Southern Europe. The main goal of this project is to improve the security of gas supplies to Europe and reduce Russia’s share as a gas supplier in the European gas market.
On March 23, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the transfer of natural gas payments for EU countries and other countries that have introduced restrictive measures against the Russian Federation into rubles. The decree came into force on April 1.
German Economy Minister Peter Altmaier said that the G7 countries – the USA, Japan, Germany, Great Britain, France, Italy and Canada – refuse to pay for energy resources in Russian currency.
