When blood arteries become clogged with cholesterol plaques, it disrupts the normal blood supply and worsens the condition of the nails. The portal MedikForum writes about this.
As specified, “bad” cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein or LDL) can, in case of excess, accumulate on the inner lining of the arteries, impairing their conductivity and reducing blood flow through them. Over time, this process can lead to PAD, a disease of peripheral arteries.
PAD means that the arteries are narrowed and the limbs get less oxygen they need. This eventually leads to some external symptoms – for example, changes in the condition of the toenails. Doctors say that brittle toenails may indicate that the blood arteries may be clogged with cholesterol deposits. Also, the nail plates can thicken, lose their shine and their healthy color.
Such a change in the condition of the nails, experts believe, most often occurs as a result of blockage of the arteries of the legs, but in some cases it may be a sign that the vessels leading to the brain and heart are affected by cholesterol plaques – this indicates a high risk of stroke or heart attack.
There are also other signs of PAD. With clogged arteries and PAD, a person tends to feel pain or cramps in the legs when walking, even for short distances. In the early stages, pain usually resolves with rest but then returns with activity.
