Lithuania is ready to take the initiative to suspend the membership of the Russian Federation and Belarus in UNESCO. The draft of the relevant resolution, the discussion of which is scheduled for Tuesday, March 22, was registered on Monday at the secretariat of the Lithuanian Seimas by the chairman of the parliamentary committee on culture, Vytautas Juozapitis.

As stated in the document, Russia’s actions against Ukraine “are a gross violation of international law and the principles of the UN charter, pose a threat to security and stability in Europe and around the world, and are contrary to the mission and values of UNESCO.”

The chairman of the committee of the Seimas proposes that the authorized structures seek to suspend the participation of the Russian Federation and Belarus in UNESCO committees, intergovernmental councils and programs in the field of culture, education, science and information policy.

Earlier, Vilnius announced its readiness to close its ports to Russian ships, as well as the need for the EU countries to impose an embargo on Russian oil.
