The rotation of personnel at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant has been completed, the head of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi, told reporters, citing a message from the Ukrainian regulator.
Grossi stressed that the rotation of personnel at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant had long been postponed due to the current situation, but now the employees of the previous shift were able to “return home and rest for the first time since Russian forces took control of the nuclear power plant last month.”
The Ukrainian regulator clarified that about half of the outgoing shift of technical personnel left the nuclear power plant on Sunday, while the rest departed on Monday. At the same time, 13 employees refused to rotate, and most of the Ukrainian guards also remained in place.
On February 24, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin made an emergency appeal to the Russians and announced a special military operation in the Donbass. In his speech, he stated that “circumstances require decisive action from Russia” and stressed that “Russia will not allow Ukraine to have nuclear weapons.” In response to Russia’s actions, Western countries (USA, Canada, EU, UK, Japan) announced new, tougher sanctions against the Russian Federation, including financial and economic ones.
