The European Union is developing new sanctions against Russia because of the events in Ukraine. This is the fifth package of restrictions, which may include an embargo on Russian oil, reports Reuters, citing sources.

According to media reports, the package “will have many new names.” At the same time, the developers of the document, including Lithuania, insist on an embargo on Russian oil. However, Germany, which is more dependent on Russian gas than other EU countries and is the EU’s largest buyer of oil from Russia, has already warned against quick action due to high energy prices in Europe, the agency writes.

The discussion of this issue will take place at a meeting of EU foreign ministers on March 21, on the eve of US President Joe Biden’s visit to Brussels on March 24.

Recall that earlier the import of energy from Russia was banned by the United States, plans to abandon Russian oil were also announced by Canada and the UK. The EU said that they also intend to abandon Russian gas, oil and coal, but they will be able to do this “gradually”, without naming specific dates.
