In the first two weeks of March, the Telegram messenger in Russia bypassed WhatsApp in terms of popularity. According to RIA Novosti with reference to a study by Megafon, the share of Telegram in the total traffic in messengers increased from 48% to 63% compared to the same period in February.
At the same time, the share of WhatsApp in traffic volume decreased from 48% to 32%, the share of Viber decreased from 5% to 4%.
It is noted that the popularity of the messenger has grown against the backdrop of restrictions on access to other means of communication on the Internet and social networks. The company also emphasizes that Telegram “has become not only a communication tool, but one of the main sources of information content.” Active growth in the use of Telegram has been recorded since February 24, when the Russian special operation in Ukraine began.
The study also says that at the end of 2021, Telegram was the top communication tool in 55 regions, and it currently leads in 82 regions. The exceptions are Karachay-Cherkessia, Dagestan and Chechnya, where WhatsApp is still the most popular messenger.
Telegram also became the leader in the consumption of mobile traffic per day. On average, a user spends 101 megabytes of traffic on the service, WhatsApp users – 26 megabytes, Viber – 8 megabytes.
Recall that earlier Roskomnadzor announced that the work of the WhatsApp messenger, which belongs to Meta, will not be limited in Russia.
