In Bulgaria, the police, after nearly 24 hours of detention, released former Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, ex-Finance Minister Vladislav Goranov and ex-head of the government press service Sevdalina Arnaudova. According to TASS, no charges were brought against the detainees.
It is noted that the prosecutor’s office was unable to obtain the necessary evidence in the extortion case to assess whether a crime was committed.
According to lawyer Menko Menkov, during the detention, the current legislation was grossly violated, including the right to legal defense. He described the detention as “political repression”.
Earlier it was reported that Borisov and several other functionaries of the former ruling party were detained during a large-scale police operation. The operation was linked to an investigation by European prosecutors into more than 120 cases of abuse in Bulgaria.
The current Prime Minister of the country, Kiril Petkov, during the detentions, said on social networks: “No one is above the law.”
Boyko Borisov was at the head of the government three times – in 2009-2013, 2014-2016 and 2017-2021. In 2020, mass protests began in the country, the participants of which accused the prime minister of corruption.
