Eight men were arrested for allegedly stealing shrimp from farms in the Gulf of Guayaquil

Police officers arrested eight people who were allegedly engaged in robbery in shrimp farms located in the Gulf of Guayaquil.

Last Friday afternoon, in the vicinity of Bellavista Island, the suspects who were traveling in a speedboat were intercepted with 3,000 pounds of shrimp that they had stolen from crustacean farming pools belonging to one of the private properties.

Edison Núñez, chief of operations of the Subdirectorate for the Investigation of Crimes Against Property Anticriminal Brigade (Siprobac) in Zone 8 (Guayaquil, Durán and Samborondón), indicated that this organization used to identify shrimp farms that did not have security, entered the farms and loaded quintals of the product in speedboats.

“They use the balanced sack so that when they reach the pool the shrimp agglomerate and be able to fish, later they carried the load in different sacks so that they can be shipped and flee from the sector,” he said, adding that They wore black overalls-type clothing to enter muddy areas and not be identified by guards who prowl the outside of the shrimp farms.

In the possession of those apprehended, the merchandise, the means of river transport, an outboard motor, two firearms and communication radios were found, he said.

Representatives of shrimp farms have denounced several thefts in the area of ​​the Gulf of Guayaquil, said Núñez, who maintained that the economic damages are great, without specifying an amount.

One person affected by the recent case said that the damages are “substantial” due to the robberies suffered by the shrimp farms located in the Gulf area in the 18 years that he has been dedicated to this business.

“This is not the only group, it is a ruthless organized crime because they carry weapons and do not take the heart to kill a person,” he said, and thanked the police for the capture of the eight antisocials.

The suspects were taken to the Judicial Police of Zone 8, in western Guayaquil, in order to resolve their legal situation, last Friday night. (I)
