The International Biathlon Union (IBU) has begun the procedure for the removal of the Russian Biathlon Union (RBU) and the Belarusian Biathlon Federation (BFB) with immediate effect.
According to the IBU press service, the decision of the executive committee follows the previous measures of the IBU executive committee to prevent athletes from Russia and Belarus from participating in IBU events “in order to protect the athletes and the integrity of their competitions.” The reason for this is that the national federations of the two countries “failed to fulfill their humanitarian obligations in the spirit of the IBU constitution.”
The RRF and BSE have seven days to react to the IBU’s decision. The Board will then consider the organizations’ responses.
Earlier, on February 28, the International Olympic Committee recommended that international sports federations and competition organizers not allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in competitions due to the situation in Ukraine.
Recall that on February 21, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed decrees recognizing the independence of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics (DPR and LPR), and on February 24 he made an emergency appeal to the Russians and announced a special military operation in Donbass. In his speech, he stated that “circumstances require decisive action from Russia” and stressed that “Russia will not allow Ukraine to have nuclear weapons.”
