Britain will give Ukraine Starstreak man-portable anti-aircraft missile systems designed to destroy aircraft, Reuters reports citing British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace.
Wallace stressed that MANPADS are a defensive weapon that should give Ukraine the ability to “fight against air attacks.” Currently, Britain is considering options for training the Ukrainian military to operate Starstreak, as well as delivering MANPADS to Ukraine, the agency notes.
Starstreak, adopted by the UK in 1997, is capable of destroying air targets at altitudes of up to 5,000 meters at a distance of more than 6,000 meters.
On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin made an emergency appeal to the Russians and announced a special military operation in the Donbass. In his speech, he stated that “circumstances require decisive action from Russia” and stressed that “Russia will not allow Ukraine to have nuclear weapons.” In response to Russia’s actions, Western countries (USA, Canada, EU, UK, Japan) announced new, tougher sanctions against the Russian Federation, including financial and economic ones.
