The US could engage in high-level direct talks with Russia if it would help “stop the violence” and stop the operation in Ukraine, State Department spokesman Ned Price said.
Speaking at a briefing for journalists, Price recalled that direct negotiations with Moscow after the start of the Russian military operation in Ukraine were carried out by “partners and allies of the United States”, but none of these contacts led to a de-escalation of the situation.
Price said the US was “absolutely ready” for this “if (…) high-level US engagement helps move the issue of ending violence.”
On the eve of the representative of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov said that the meeting between Vladimir Putin and US President Joe Biden “is not yet planned.”
On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin made an emergency appeal to the Russians and announced a special military operation in the Donbass. In his speech, he stated that “circumstances require decisive action from Russia” and stressed that “Russia will not allow Ukraine to have nuclear weapons.” In response to Russia’s actions, Western countries (USA, Canada, EU, UK, Japan) announced new, tougher sanctions against the Russian Federation, including financial and economic ones.
