Finnish President Sauli Niiniste said in an interview with the American channel CNN that Russian leader Vladimir Putin “does not seek to change the government of Ukraine,” Yle reports.

According to the publication, an excerpt from the interview was published by CNN journalist Christian Amarpour on her Twitter page. According to the quotation, Niiniste, speaking of his conversation with Putin on Friday, said that a change in the government of Ukraine “is not on Putin’s list of demands.” At the same time, he cited the statement of the Russian leader that Russia “never set this as its goal.”

As noted, Niiniste is one of the few foreign politicians who communicated with Putin directly after the start of the Russian military operation in Ukraine. Several telephone conversations were held by French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennet also spoke with Putin.
