The Japanese Foreign Ministry has released a list of sanctions against 17 Russian citizens, including CPFR leader Gennady Zyuganov, Renova group founder Viktor Vekselberg, and relatives of businessman Yuri Kovalchuk. This is reported by the website of the department.

The Japanese list of sanctioned persons also includes: First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Ivan Melnikov, First Deputy Head of the Communist Party faction Nikolai Kolomeitsev, State Duma deputies Nikolai Osadchiy, Dmitry Novikov, Vladimir Kashin, Evgeny Bessonov, Leonid Kalashnikov, Kazbek Kaisaev and Yuri Afonin.

All listed persons will have their assets frozen in Japan, and the citizens of the country themselves will be prohibited from entering into financial transactions with them.

Earlier, the Japanese government decided to impose a ban on the export of oil refining equipment to Russia as part of a new package of sanctions due to the Russian military special operation in Ukraine, and also expanded the list of personal sanctions by adding 20 more Russians to the updated list, including businessmen and officials. The sanctions, in particular, hit the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov, the deputy head of the presidential administration Dmitry Kozak and Sergey Kiriyenko, the head of Chechnya Ramzan Kadyrov, businessmen Alisher Usmanov, Gennady Timchenko, Arkady and Boris Rotenberg.

Tokyo also imposed sanctions on the Internet Research Agency and PMC Wagner.

Recall that on February 21, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed decrees recognizing the independence of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics (DPR and LPR), and on February 24 he made an emergency appeal to the Russians and announced a special military operation in Donbass. In his speech, he stated that “circumstances require decisive action from Russia” and stressed that “Russia will not allow Ukraine to have nuclear weapons.”

In response to Russia’s actions, Western countries (USA, Canada, European Union, Great Britain, Japan) announced new, tougher sanctions against the Russian Federation, including financial and economic ones.
