Eleven international companies have shown interest in operating the Quito metro

At least eleven companies from ten countries have shown interest in becoming operator of the Quito Metro, as reported by the Metropolitan Public Company Quito Metro (EPMMQ). Since the end of last year and until February 2022, representatives of foreign firms have arrived in the country to learn about the facilities, stations and fleet that the capital’s underground transport system has.

In a statement shared on March 14, Metro de Quito reported that Maintained relationships with the following companies: Passenger Transport Company Metro SA (Chile), Hitachi Rail STS (Italy-Japan), RATP DEV (France), Deutsche Bahn (Germany), Transdev (France), Medellín Metro (Colombia), Renfe Public Business Entity (Spain), Companhia do Metropolitano de Sao Paolo (Brazil)Transports Metropolitans TMB (Spain), Keolis (France) and Santo Domingo Metro (Dominican Republic).

During your visits, the delegates have had meetings with the manager of the Quito Metro, Efraín Bastidas, with officials from the operations and equipment and facilities management. In these meetings, experiences were shared in terms of technical, legal and administrative aspects, so that the international companies can present their formal offers when the tender is called for the contracting of an international railway operator.

On February 24, during a discussion about the goals achieved and the roadmap for the operation of the metro, Bastidas indicated that in March there will be a market studywhich is a pre-contractual process.

“We will invite all the Metros in the world that want to participate, all the world railway operators that want to participate. AND we will give them a period of 90 days to prepare their technical offers”, announced Bastidas; however, he did not specify the date when this phase will start.

After this pre-contractual stage, the hiring will proceed and, later, continue with the award of the international railway operator. The latter will be specified at the beginning of the second half of 2022 and, with this, it will be possible for the Quito metro to start operating in the last quarter of the year, Bastidas anticipated.
