How to get rid of flies and get them to leave you alone

Flies, that insect that seems to never leave us. By not biting -except for some rare species- they seem harmless, but apart from being annoying and causing real disgust to many people, flies are carriers of microorganisms and pathogens capable of contaminating food and affecting our health. They can transmit diseases such as Salmonella or el E. coli.

Surely on more than one occasion you have seen yourself fighting a stubborn fly. And it is that eliminating flies is not always easy, especially if we do not want to use certain insecticides.

It is estimated that in the world there are 12,000 species of flies and are considered a plague. Although its life is not very long, it lasts about 30 days, a female gets to lay between 400 and 600 eggs. It is clear that the problem can grow very quickly if measures are not taken in time.

Tricks to kick the flies

In addition to insecticides and various electrical traps, there are other options to scare away flies.

1. Apple cider vinegar

This natural and easy-to-make fly trap is ideal for use both indoors and outdoors and is one of the most effective methods out there. Fill a bowl three-quarters full with apple cider vinegar and add a drop of detergent. The detergent will allow the liquid in the bowl to have a firmer surface, giving the flies a false sense of security, before they end up falling into the vinegar. When you do this, be sure to place the bowl away from any other temptations on the table or counter. You don’t want anything else to catch their attention and steer them away from your trap.

2. Citronella candles. They are known for their great qualities as a mosquito repellent, but they have also been shown to be equally effective in getting rid of flies. Citronella oil placed in a burner also works. If you are using the candle or a burner, allow them to burn for about 30 minutes for the best results.

2. Repellent based on vodka. Flies hate the smell of vodka, so this is another great reason why this alcohol-based solution works as a great natural remedy. Use it to spray surfaces.

3. Cucumber. Flies hate their smell. If you see that the flies get very close to somewhere like the garbage can, for example, they may lay their eggs there. To avoid this, place cucumber slices on top of the cube.

4. Transparent bags. Fill each bag three-quarters full with water, add a few coins, and tie a knot at the top of the bag. Use this knot to hang the bags on the doors of your house. When the flies try to enter the door, they see in the water bags what appears to be something that disorients them.

5. Milk sugar pepper traps. Heat a cup of milk, a tablespoon of pepper and three teaspoons of sugar in a saucepan. Simmer the mixture for five to ten minutes, then pour it onto a shallow plate. Place the bowls in areas that attract flies and watch the flies gravitate towards them and drown after landing on the bowls.

6. If you are eating outside or just trying to relax in the garden, place glasses of water around the area you want to protect from flies and put four or five coins of a cent in each.

7. Lemons with cloves. Put as many whole cloves in the pulp of half a lemon as you can and put the lemon in a bowl. As simple as that. But remember to put the lemons on the table at least 30 minutes before sitting down.

8. An easy trick to deter flies is to plant aromatic herbs and fragrant like mint, basil, lemongrass, and lavender.
