NATO troops must be permanently stationed in the Baltic countries and in Poland to protect them from possible Russian aggression, Latvian President Egils Levits said in an interview with CNN.
Levits stressed that the American contingent should be located on the eastern flank in the Baltics, Poland and Romania in order to “send a powerful signal” to Russia about the readiness of the alliance to defend its member countries.
In addition, Levits called NATO the strongest military alliance in the world and said that its military potential far exceeds that of Russia.
Recall, on February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin made an emergency appeal to the Russians and announced a special military operation in the Donbass. In his speech, he stated that “circumstances require decisive action from Russia” and stressed that “Russia will not allow Ukraine to have nuclear weapons.” In response to Russia’s actions, Western countries (USA, Canada, EU, UK, Japan) announced new, tougher sanctions against the Russian Federation, including financial and economic ones.
