The International Criminal Court named three possible perpetrators of war crimes during the 2008 Five-Day War in Transcaucasia. ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan demanded warrants for the arrest of former representatives of the South Ossetian authorities.

As TASS explains, these are the former deputy head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of South Ossetia, Mikhail Mindzaev, the former head of the pre-trial detention center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the partially recognized republic, Hamlet Guchmazov, and the former republican ombudsman, David Sanakoev. Khan’s request has already reached the pre-trial chamber of the international instance.

According to the prosecutor, Mindzaev, Guchmazov and Sanakoeva from August 8 to 27, 2008 could have been involved in the illegal detention of prisoners, taking hostages, illegal deportation, torture, infringement of human dignity and inhuman treatment in and around South Ossetia. According to the ICC prosecutor, he has “relevant evidence” in his hands.

The reaction of Tskhinval to this statement is still unknown.

In August 2008, after a military operation to “force Georgia into peace,” Russia recognized the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Tbilisi accuses Moscow of tearing away its territories. The Georgian authorities have repeatedly appealed to international judicial bodies with a demand to investigate the crimes that took place during those events, reminds Gazeta.Ru.

At the same time, the ICC recently opened another investigation – about possible war crimes in the course of a special operation of the Russian Federation in Ukraine.
