The violence is spilling over into Esmeraldas. The province bordering Colombia has become in these first 70 days of the year the second with the most crimes in the country, after Guayas.
Not even a greater presence of soldiers and police in the streets, ordered weeks ago by the Government, has managed to stop this wave of violent deaths.
Of the 18 violent deaths that Esmeraldas registered from January 1 to March 11 of last year, the province has gone on to have 84 crimes in the same compared period of this 2022. That implies that more than one death is reported almost daily.

Residents of sectors also speak of robberies affecting the population, as well as extortion of businesses. Motorcycle criminals, for example, this week stole a laptop from a female student on campus.
The fear of robberies and assaults has caused the population to take precautions and avoid carrying out activities at certain times and areas.
