Those who continue to use Facebook and Instagram after they are blocked will not be equated with extremists after the possible recognition of Meta as an extremist organization. Andrey Klishas, head of the Federation Council Committee on Constitutional Legislation and State Building, stated this to the Rise publication.
At the same time, Klishas believes that this should be answered by blocking all Meta resources, including WhatsApp. However, TASS and RIA Novosti, citing their sources, clarified that WhatsApp would not be blocked, since it is a means of communication, not of posting information.
Earlier on Friday, the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation sent an application to the court recognizing Meta Platforms Inc. extremist organization and asked to be banned from its activities in Russia. The reason was that the social networks Facebook and Instagram announced their intention to lift the ban on calls for violence against the Russian military in posts. The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation opened a case on calls for violence against Russians.
