The Walt Disney Company has announced that it is suspending the activities of all its divisions in Russia.
The distribution of the company’s films was suspended last week due to the situation in Ukraine. Disney has now said that “in light of the escalation of the situation,” the decision is rolling out to all other businesses, including content and product licensing, Disney Cruise Line operations, National Geographic magazine and the channel’s operation.
According to the company, some activities will be suspended “immediately”. The suspension of the TV channel and other projects will take time “due to the peculiarities of the agreements,” Disney added. At the same time, the company promises that Russian employees will not lose their jobs.
Previously, Warner Bros., Sony, Paramount and Universal Pictures canceled the distribution of their films in the country. Then WarnerMedia, which owns, in particular, the CNN channel, the Warner Brothers studio and the HBO television network, announced the suspension of work in Russia.
Recall, on February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin made an emergency appeal to the Russians and announced a special military operation in the Donbass. In his speech, he stated that “circumstances require decisive action from Russia” and stressed that “Russia will not allow Ukraine to have nuclear weapons.” In response to Russia’s actions, Western countries (USA, Canada, EU, UK, Japan) announced new, tougher sanctions against the Russian Federation, including financial and economic ones.
