In Ecuador, from January to July 2021, the demand for electricity increased by 8.13% in relation to the same period in 2020. According to information from the National Electricity Operator CENACEduring the period between January and July 2021, Ecuador consumed 15,086 gigawatt-hours (GWh).
However, there are still areas of the country that do not have the basic service, especially those sectors far from the main cities and cantons, as is the case of the Yacupamaba community, in the Guamote canton, Many of whose farmers had difficulties, due to the darkness, to return to their homes, since they did not have lighting in the areas where their inhabitants travel the most.
This is why Cervecería Nacional, beverage industry company in Ecuador, together with the solar energy company Litro de Luz, delivered 50 self-sustaining power poles to more than 500 inhabitants of this community. This endowment responds to the commitment made with Ecuadorian farmers in the Sowing by Contract program.
Liter of Light It is a social enterprise, which creates street lighting solutions for communities nationwide. The main objective of this company is to provide ease of access to this service, especially for the most vulnerable groups.
The idea was originally born with the Filipino inventor Illac Diazand is extended to Ecuador thanks to the initiative of Rafael Ramírez and five other partners that make up “A Liter of Light”. This social enterprise has been carrying out this type of sustainable work for 10 years, in 33 countries around the world, this being the first time in Ecuador.
“We are very happy with these light poles because we get up very early to work on our land and at that time (03:00 or 04:00) you can’t see anything, with these poles we will produce much more; and for young people who always wanted to play soccer or volleyball games on weekends at night, now they will be able to play”, said Miguel Paucar, president of the Yacupamaba community.

The poles delivered were made with glass and PVC bottles, integrating technology: solar energy with solar panels, special batteries and a LED light bulb.; and they were placed in the playground of the community school, in the soccer and volleyball field, community kitchen and bathrooms, on the roads of the main road, periphery and entrance of this sector; allowing its inhabitants to have more security when leaving and returning to their daily activities.

The 50 sustainable light poles, with zero carbon emissions, were assembled during a technology appropriation and creation workshop (performed by Liter of Light engineers) with the entire community; that is, the post is not armed, it is assembled and placed in the company of the community.
The luminaire was placed in the playground of the community school, in the soccer and volleyball field, community kitchen and bathrooms, and on the paths of the main road, periphery and entrance of this sector; allowing its inhabitants to have more security when leaving and returning to your daily activities.
