Ukrainian citizen Yaroslav Vasinsky, accused of using ransomware as part of the Russian cybercriminal group REvil (Sodinokibi), was extradited to the United States from Poland, according to the website of the US Department of Justice.

According to the agency, in August 2021, 22-year-old Yaroslav Vasinsky “gained access to the internal computer networks of several victim companies and deployed REvil ransomware to encrypt data on the computers of the victim companies.” He is also suspected of being involved in a July 2021 cyberattack on IT infrastructure management software provider Kaseya, during which ransomware hit the devices of the company’s customers around the world.

Vasinsky was detained in Poland and extradited to the United States. On the charges against him, he faces up to 115 years in prison.

The US believes that the REvil group is involved in hacker attacks on the largest meat producer in the world, on the American Colonial Pipeline, as well as on the Brazilian company JBS. For the return of access to data, the attackers demanded a ransom.
