The United States plans to introduce a ban on the purchase of energy resources from Russia. It is reported by Bloomberg, citing unnamed sources.
It is noted that the ban will affect the oil, coal, and LNG sectors.
According to media reports, this decision was made during consultations with European partners. The White House announced the speech of US President Joe Biden at 18:45 Moscow time on March 8 – he should announce new measures against the Russian Federation in connection with the situation in Ukraine.
At the same time, the head of the German Ministry of Economy, Robert Habek, has already stated that the United States will not demand from Germany a ban on oil imports from Russia. “Germany is a country that imports oil. Russian imports account for 35%. They told me during the negotiations that they would neither call for nor demand that Germany do the same, ”said the German minister, quoted by TASS. However, he added that Berlin is ready to stop the supply of energy resources from Russia. The German authorities have been working on a similar scenario since December 2021 – we are talking about such main energy sources as oil, gas and coal. According to the minister, Germany will be able to do without importing raw materials from Russia for a long time.
Let us add that sanctions against Moscow are being adopted in connection with the special operation of the Russian Federation in the Donbass. Recall that on February 21, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed decrees recognizing the independence of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics (DPR and LPR), and on February 24 he made an emergency appeal to the Russians and announced a special military operation in Donbass. In his speech, he stated that “circumstances require decisive action from Russia” and stressed that “Russia will not allow Ukraine to have nuclear weapons.”
