In the photos shared by the portal, you can see the body of the turtle whose shell is crushed. From the size it is deduced that it is a juvenile. It is not yet known who is to blame for the incident. ANDThis would be the second run over of a giant tortoise recorded this year in the archipelago. The first occurred on February 15.

In March 2019, a turtle was run over in Santa Cruz. On that occasion, the tortoise survived and was taken to a rehabilitation center, but was euthanized due to its serious condition.

Sea lions, birds, snakes, lizards and iguanas have also been run over in the archipelago. In fact, the canary maria (Setophaga petechia aureola), the only bright yellow bird in the Galapagos, is the one that dies the most when run over by vehicles on the road that connects Puerto Ayora with the pier to cross the Itabaca channel to the island of Baltra, where the airport is located.

Specimens of another 17 species of birds also die, according to a monitoring carried out by the Charles Darwin Foundation (CDF) and the Galapagos National Park (PNG) and which was published by this newspaper in 2019. The months with the highest number of collisions are April, May and June.

In March 2019, a man ran over a pelican on the Santa Cruz pier. The driver received a $6,382.86 fine and 120 hours of community service.

According to PNG records as of 2019, one turtle a year is run over on the islands. (I)
