Cynthia Viteri: ‘That they protect the people is what Guayaquil residents demand, once we have given them what they need; give results’

The mayor of Guayaquil, Cynthia Viteri, spoke about the crime problem with which the city lives.

In an act of donation of wheelchairs, the official demanded “results” from the government authorities regarding citizen security, and emphasized the implements delivered by the Buenos Aires council, despite not being its competence.

The official recalled that the council has allocated around $24 million for the provision of tools, such as drones, cell phones and gasoline for vehicles.

“Use what we have given you to fight crime. That they catch criminals, that they protect people is what we Guayaquileans demand, once we have given them the necessary tools from 911 Guayaquil, to gasoline. Give people results, which is what they are waiting for,” he said.

In addition, she stressed the need for public policies that counteract crime and not only palliative measures provided by the central government, which is in charge of that competence.

“Fight crime with anti-crime policies and not with pyrotechnic decisions that are made when an event has come to public view or has shocked society. There must be a security policy for the entire country; It is not that an event occurs and they send a thousand police officers, and then the thousand police officers leave because they are needed elsewhere,” Viteri said.

So far this year, Zone 8, which includes Guayaquil, Durán and Samborondón, has experienced a threefold increase in violent deaths compared to the same period last year.

The majority of cases (92%) have been attributed by government authorities to conflicts between gangs fighting over drug trafficking. In the most recent case, seven people were killed and two others were injured while sharing in an alley in Las Malvinas, in the south of the city.

Last weekend, Colonel Víctor Zárate, commander of Zone 8 of the National Police, highlighted the 106,468 operations deployed in Guayaquil and the other cantons that group Zone 8 to protect citizen security and public order.

Among the figures, 1,084 detainees stand out, 335 weapons seized (34 long weapons), 191 vehicles recovered, 5,540 white weapons seized, 134 motorcycles recovered. In addition, he highlighted that a total of 40 gangs have been dismantled and 5,926 motorcycles were retained by the municipal ordinance of two people on motorcycles. (I)
