The twisted irons of two cars remained on the Pan-American highway, at the height of the Belisario Quevedo parish, in Latacunga (Cotopaxi), after both vehicles collided head-on. In this event, which was reported to ECU 911 around midnight on Saturday, March 5, five people died and two others were injured.
Personnel from the Ministry of Public Health, the National Police and the Fire Department of Salcedo, PujilĂ and Latacunga arrived at the site to provide medical assistance and carry out the extraction maneuvers of three people trapped inside the vehicles. At that time, the occupants still had vital signs: a 24-year-old woman and two men aged 35 and 24.
According to the ECU911 report, the three injured were taken to different health houses, but one of them, the 24-year-old man, died upon arrival at the Latacunga general hospital.
While they were doing this rescue work, the lifeless bodies of four people – two men aged 22 and 25, and two women aged 22 and 23 – were lying on the road. Until the morning of this Sunday, March 6, the identity of the victims of this accident was not released.
Those who died in this road accident, which occurred on the Latacunga-Salcedo highway, 150 meters south of the bridge over the Illuchi River, were transferred by Legal Medicine vehicles to the Latacunga cemetery morgue.
The National Police reported, in a preliminary way, that the traffic accident was an “eccentric frontal collision”, in which a car with a Guayas license plate and another vehicle with a Pichincha license plate were involved.
Subsequently, the two vehicles were transferred to the holding yards. After the respective skills, the transit authorities will determine the responsibilities in this case. (I)
