The northern capital was named the “most unusual” city participating in the All-Russian League of Sports Veterans program, which helps retired champions of past years. The Rosbalt correspondent was told about this in the Constellation of Good Foundation, where they also shared the stories of elderly residents of the city.
More than 80 wards of the organization live in St. Petersburg: honored sports veterans, winners of Olympiads, All-Union and international competitions. They regularly receive healthy food baskets.
“Petersburgers have a special mentality. Many of the participants in the program survived the siege of Leningrad. These are proud, resilient, independent people,” said Vitaly Mnatsakanov, co-founder of the fund.
At a meeting with volunteers, one of the wards, 100-year-old Natalya Vetoshnikova, a Soviet tennis player, Master of Sports of the USSR, noted that it is important to practice your favorite sport for as long as possible. Galina Vecherkovskaya, a 95-year-old rower, Honored Master of Sports in rowing, five-time European champion, who still wins competitions, shares the same opinion. She has seven absolute victories in the world among sports veterans in rowing.
“You have to constantly keep yourself in shape. For example, I walk three kilometers every day, in any weather. It’s like drinking a glass of water for me. Necessarily!” – said the athlete.
In 2021, the foundation plans to donate more than 300 baskets of healthy products to sports veterans of the northern capital. Informal meetings are also planned.
We add that the League of Sports Veterans project has been launched since May 2020.
