Finland’s speedy accession to NATO provides for ratification by all member countries of the alliance, whose parliamentary regime differs. It is reported by Helsingin Sanomat with reference to the words of Finnish President Sauli Niiniste.
According to Niiniste, this may cause some difficulties.
Niiniste also specified that Finland intends to start closer cooperation with the US. As for the country’s entry into NATO, he assured that the country meets all the requirements, but did not provide any specifics about the application for membership in the alliance.
Earlier, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that NATO would expand cooperation with Finland and Sweden – both countries with non-bloc status will take part in all consultations of the North Atlantic Defense Alliance related to the events in Ukraine.
Also, we recall, according to a survey conducted by Taloustutkimus, 79% of Finns believe that the direction in which Russia is currently developing poses a threat to Finland.
On February 24, President Putin issued an emergency address to the Russians and announced a special military operation in the Donbass. In his speech, he stated that “circumstances require decisive action from Russia” and stressed that “Russia will not allow Ukraine to have nuclear weapons.”
In response to Russia’s actions, Western countries (USA, Canada, European Union, Great Britain, Japan) announced new, tougher sanctions against the Russian Federation, including financial and economic ones.
