Roskomnadzor has decided to block access to the Facebook network (owned by Meta Platforms, Inc.) in Russia.

According to the department, the decision was made after the Zvezda TV channel, RIA Novosti, Sputnik, Russia Today, Lenta.ru and Gazeta.ru were subjected to “discrimination” on the platform.

Recall that earlier Roskomnadzor announced a temporary restriction of access to the social network Facebook from February 25. The initial message explained that the measures were due to the fact that the social network (owned by Meta Platforms) restricted the official accounts of the Russian media: Zvezda TV channel, RIA Novosti, Lenta.ru and Gazeta.ru. Roskomnadzor said that it demanded that Meta’s administration explain the reason for the introduction of restrictions and remove them, but the company “ignored” the regulator’s demands.

Meta, in turn, explained the company’s position and its vision of the situation. Vice President Nick Clegg said Russian authorities have asked “to stop independent fact-checking and labeling of content” published by Russian media. Meta refused to do so. “As a result, they announced that they would limit the operation of our services,” Clegg explained.

The restriction on Russian resources was imposed on 24 February. RIA Novosti reported that Facebook explained this by spreading “false information”. The platform notified the agency that its posts would be shown in the news feed below so that fewer users would see them.
