The Animal Welfare Unit (UBA) of the Municipality of Quito reported that 98 animals were treated by the flood of La Comuna and La Gasca of last January 31. After a process of physical and emotional stabilization, five dogs were not claimed by their owners.

The natural disaster that occurred in the north center of the capital left 28 people dead and more than 50 wounded. However, animals were also affected.

Jaime Grijalvadirector of UBA told this newspaper that, of the total number of animals attended, 20 were referred to private clinics and transferred to temporary homes. After the attention, the majority came to claim their pets, however, they have waited for the prudent time and included these five dogs in the adoption process.

Grijalva also pointed out that this area, in the north center of the capital, is characterized by have an overpopulation of stray animals, pointed out that he cannot say that they are all abandoned, because some they roam the streets, but they do return to a home.

For this reason, he announced that throughout the month of March they will undertake a sterilization campaign in La Commune and La Gasca. This service will be completely free. Currently, the UBA has 30 animals (between dogs and cats) ready to be adopted responsibly by Quito families.

The director of this entity indicated that most of the pets were abandoned or rescued from an abusive situation by their former guardians. These animals go through a rehabilitation process before being put up for adoption.
