Don’t Dress Your Pet Like a Person, Experts Warn

The German Humane Society warns that animals should not be overdressed or dressed as if they were people. “Many animal owners find it cute when their pet wears something, even if there is no need for it to be worn,” says spokeswoman Lea Schmitz.

It also adds that the needs of the animals are generally not taken into account when acting in this way.

The warning was made on the occasion of the celebration entitled Dress Up Your Pet Day (January 14), popular and widespread especially in the United States.

The animals are well protected from the cold by their fur, Schmitz explains. Therefore, they should only be sheltered in exceptional cases, such as when a dog is very old or sick, or if it is a breed with a finer or shorter coat.

Schmitz notes that in the case of freezing temperatures, it may be convenient to buy a coat in a specialized store. However, he stresses that socks or slippers should only be put on the dog if directed by the vet.

Other pets do not need any type of coat. In the case of cats, for example, it must be ensured that the animal has the possibility of entering the home independently when it is very cold.

The Humane Society also discourages the use of products originally created for people as a matter of fashion. It indicates that clothing and accessories that only serve to please people can limit the freedom of movement of animals, negatively influence the regulation of their body temperature and even cause them to be injured.

“Animals should not be humanized. The well-being of the animal must always be above the fashion ideals of its owner”, Schmitz points out.

“Dress Up Your Pet Day” was launched in 2009 by Colleen Paige, who describes herself on her website as “America’s leading expert on lifestyle (lifestyle) for pets and family.”
