The US presidential administration is considering imposing sanctions against India due to its dependence on the supply of Russian military equipment, writes The Hill, citing US Assistant Secretary of State for South Asian Affairs Donald Lu.

According to Lu, the US authorities are currently “trying to figure out how much the historically close military relationship between Russia and India threatens US security.”

The assistant secretary stressed that the administration is “considering the broad question of whether to apply sanctions under the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act or to waive those sanctions.”

Recall, on February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin made an emergency appeal to the Russians and announced a special military operation in the Donbass. In his speech, he stated that “circumstances require decisive action from Russia” and stressed that “Russia will not allow Ukraine to have nuclear weapons.” In response to Russia’s actions, Western countries (USA, Canada, European Union, Great Britain, Japan) announced new, tougher sanctions against the Russian Federation, including financial and economic ones.
