“Moscow wants to return to the Soviet fantasy”: Nuland called the conditions for lifting sanctions

New Western anti-Russian sanctions will be lifted if the military special operation in Ukraine stops. This was stated in an interview with TASS by US Deputy Secretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland.

According to her, the sanctions will end with the end of the operation, as well as if Moscow returns peace to Ukraine, helps restore it and recognizes its territorial integrity and sovereignty. According to Nuland, the Russian authorities are currently denying “Ukraine’s very right to exist.”

When asked whether the United States plans to recognize Russia’s red lines and its demands to prevent Ukraine from joining NATO, as well as expanding the alliance to the east, the representative of the agency answered in a streamlined way. She noted that the States “were ready to talk” about most of the security issues important to Russia in Europe, including conflict prevention and the reduction of military exercises. However, according to the diplomat, NATO is not going to dictate to another country with whom it should enter into alliances, and Russia is not going to allow NATO to make decisions for it.

Victoria Nuland recalled that NATO “does not attack unless it is attacked” and had no intention of pursuing Russia. With regard to Ukraine, she stressed that it has a lot of work to do to join the alliance and that this is not a matter of the near future.

According to the representative of the US foreign policy department, “Ukraine posed zero threat to Russia, and NATO posed zero threat to Russia,” and in general, in the 21st century, there is no need to “invade” another country if there is diplomacy. Nuland stated that Moscow originally planned to “reincorporate” Ukraine (as well as Belarus) into Russia in order to return to “some 1979 Soviet fantasy”.

Recall, on February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin made an emergency appeal to the Russians and announced a special military operation in the Donbass. In his speech, he stated that “circumstances require decisive action from Russia” and stressed that “Russia will not allow Ukraine to have nuclear weapons.” In response to Russia’s actions, Western countries (USA, Canada, European Union, Great Britain, Japan) announced new, tougher sanctions against the Russian Federation, including financial and economic ones.
