China is not yet ready to express a clear position in the confrontation between Russia and the West, but the political leadership of the country is closely watching the development of the situation. This was stated in an interview with RFI by Igor Denisov, senior researcher at the Institute for International Studies at MGIMO.
“So far, China has taken a position of non-interference in the events in Ukraine, but taking into account most of the Russian interests on the issue of European security. It is known that the first contact at a high level has already taken place – a conversation between the Foreign Ministers of China and Ukraine, and a telephone conversation between Xi Jinping and Vladimir Zelensky is quite possible, ”the expert said.
Nevertheless, he noted, China abstained from voting both in the UN Security Council and at the session of the General Assembly of this organization. At the same time, according to Denisov, one can already see the first signs that military actions in Europe do not meet Chinese interests. In particular, the Chinese representatives said that this is not the development that China would like to see.
Despite the positive reaction that the start of Russian-Ukrainian negotiations caused in China, China is unlikely to see itself as a moderator here, Denisov believes. He is convinced that China will not criticize Russia and will not impose anti-Russian sanctions, but at the same time, it will definitely not support the independent status of the LPR and DPR.
