Today there were reports about the beginning of the blocking of the YouTube video service in Russia. After the authorities closed access to several Russian media outlets (almost all Ukrainian ones are blocked) and the “slowdown” of Facebook and Twitter, the threat of shutting down the world’s most popular video hosting site for Russians seems quite real to many.

On March 2, users began to report problems with YouTube. As the website Downdetector, which monitors the failures of various resources in the global network, shows, the video service works intermittently, primarily in Moscow and St. Petersburg, as well as in the Crimea.
According to the Roskomsvoboda website, on March 2, one of the YouTube domains responsible for uploading channel logos, avatars and other images was blocked.
Blocking is carried out by the TSPU DPI system installed by providers. Attempts to connect to the domain through OBIT, Rostelecom, MTS and Tele2 were unsuccessful.
Meanwhile, Roskomnadzor (RKN) said that “the decision to block YouTube video hosting in Russia has not been made.”
At 19:45 Moscow time, the domain, which was presumably blocked, became available, Roskomsvoboda reported.
However, this calms few people – what is happening is very similar to a kind of “teaching” on blocking a resource. Moreover, earlier the RKN sent a letter to Google demanding to remove the restrictions imposed on the YouTube channels of the Russian media Zvezda, Sputnik and RBC. Recently, failure to comply with a similar requirement led to a “slowdown” of Facebook. Experts believe that technically the work of video hosting, whose monthly audience in the country is 89.4 million people, can be completely blocked.
Most users believe that blocking YouTube in the current situation is not only possible, but will happen literally in the coming days.
