The United States, together with its allies, is imposing new sanctions against Russia and Belarus. According to CNN, 22 Russian defense enterprises fall under them, including those producing combat aircraft, missiles and drones. The United States is also introducing export controls on Russia for oil and gas production equipment.
Among the measures taken on Wednesday are restrictions affecting Belarus’ export control policy. The sanctions are aimed at preventing the diversion of technology and software to Russia through a neighboring country, which White House officials say would “severely limit” the ability of Russia and Belarus to obtain the materials they need to support their military operations in Ukraine.
The US and its allies are also targeting measures to limit the export of refining technology, which they believe will help the US move towards its goal of removing Russia as a major energy supplier over time.
On February 24, President Putin issued an emergency address to the Russians and announced a special military operation in the Donbass. In his speech, he stated that “circumstances require decisive action from Russia” and stressed that “Russia will not allow Ukraine to have nuclear weapons.”
In response to Russia’s actions, Western countries (USA, Canada, European Union, Great Britain, Japan) announced new, tougher sanctions against the Russian Federation, including financial and economic ones.
