Russian banks subject to EU sanctions will be disconnected from the SWIFT international payment system on March 12, according to a statement on the website of the company operating the system.

The statement notes that the shutdown will be carried out within the deadline set by the EU regulation.

Earlier, the European Union decided to disconnect seven Russian banks from the international system of interbank payments SWIFT: VTB, Rossiya, Otkritie, Novikombank, Promsvyazbank, Sovcombank and VEB.RF. The European Commission said that “if necessary” Brussels is ready to add new banks to this list.

Recall, on February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin made an emergency appeal to the Russians and announced a special military operation in the Donbass. In his speech, he stated that “circumstances require decisive action from Russia” and stressed that “Russia will not allow Ukraine to have nuclear weapons.” In response to Russia’s actions, Western countries (USA, Canada, European Union, Great Britain, Japan) announced new, tougher sanctions against the Russian Federation, including financial and economic ones.
