France is not at war with Russia. This statement was made by French President Emmanuel Macron during a televised address to the nation.
“We are not waging war against Russia. <…> We know how much we are connected with the people of Russia, the great European people who made such great sacrifices during World War II to save Europe,” Macron said, quoted by TASS. “Events in Ukraine will have an impact on the democratic life of the French and the election campaign, which actually begins at the end of this week,” the French leader added.
“The balance on the continent is upset and suggests major changes in our daily lives in the coming months. Agriculture and industry will suffer. Economic growth will slow down. Purchasing power will decrease, prices will rise,” Macron explained. He noted that the government is taking measures to support the economy, is actively looking for new fuel suppliers.
Macron also disagreed with the statement that the special operation of the Russian Federation involves the fight against Nazism.
Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, reacted to Macron’s statements. In her Telegram channel, she advised the high representatives of France “to read documentary materials about the acts of the Nazis under the current Kiev regime, citing as an example the desecration of a monument to the victims of the Holocaust in the Nikolaev region of the country in Ukraine.”
Let us add that on March 10-11, the EU summit on the situation in Ukraine will be held in Versailles.
Recall, on February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin made an emergency appeal to the Russians and announced a special military operation in the Donbass. In his speech, he stated that “circumstances require decisive action from Russia” and stressed that “Russia will not allow Ukraine to have nuclear weapons.” In response to Russia’s actions, Western countries (USA, Canada, European Union, Great Britain, Japan) announced new, tougher sanctions against the Russian Federation, including financial and economic ones.
