Canada has expanded sanctions against Russia. New restrictive measures are being introduced against 10 key individuals from two important companies in the Russian energy sector, Rosneft and Gazprom, Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said.
The measures are designed to put further pressure on the Russian leadership against the backdrop of a special operation in Ukraine, the minister added, his statement was published on the website of the Canadian Foreign Ministry. The list of persons included in the next sanctions package is not attached to the application.
Canada has already imposed three packages of economic sanctions against Russia on February 22, 24 and 26. The restrictions included Russian President Vladimir Putin, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov, Justice Minister Konstantin Chuichenko and Chief of the Russian General Staff Valery Gerasimov.
Meanwhile, Republican senators in the US have tabled a bill that would impose sanctions on all Russian state-owned enterprises, including Rosneft, Gazprom and RT, because of the events in Ukraine. This is stated in a statement published on the website of one of the authors of this initiative, Florida Senator Mark Rubio.
