The German automaker BMW announced the suspension of the production of brand cars at the Avtotor Kaliningrad plant and the cessation of exports of cars of its brand to the Russian market. It is reported by The Wall Street Journal.
Bayerische Motoren Werke spokesman stressed that this was done due to the current geopolitical situation. The suspension of production and supply will be in effect, he said, until further notice.
The luxury car maker also said supply chain disruptions and the closure of supplying plants in Ukraine would impact production at some of the group’s plants.
According to the publication, two years ago the company abandoned the construction of its own plant in Kaliningrad and instead became a partner of the Russian automaker Avtotor, which assembles BMW cars from so-called semi-disassembled kits. Kits contain vehicle components and are assembled into working vehicles at the factory, a common practice in the automotive industry when it is not economically feasible to operate a full factory.
BMW’s decision came after a growing number of car companies suspended factories in Russia or stopped selling cars in Russia due to Western sanctions. So, earlier, the Moscow Renault plant announced a week-long suspension of work due to interruptions in the supply of components, and the Hyundai plant in St. Petersburg suspended production from March 1 to 5.
Recall, on February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin made an emergency appeal to the Russians and announced a special military operation in the Donbass. In his speech, he stated that “circumstances require decisive action from Russia” and stressed that “Russia will not allow Ukraine to have nuclear weapons.”
Against the background of the escalation of the situation around Ukraine, its President Volodymyr Zelensky invited the Russian side to sit down at the negotiating table. The first round took place yesterday. Negotiations will continue in the coming days.
